Chery has launched the Tiggo 9 C-DM plug-in hybrid in China, expanding its Tiggo 9 family with updated models and introducing the new Tiggo 9X derivative. This move aims to offer consumers a wider range of powertrains and configurations, with special promotional pricing during China's National Day holiday.
The New Tiggo 9 Family
The 2025 Tiggo 9 has received a mid-cycle update, focusing on configuration adjustments rather than drastic design changes. The model retains its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, delivering 192 kW and 400 Nm of torque, alongside a choice of either a seven-speed dual-clutch or an eight-speed automatic transmission based on the trim. Measuring 4820/1930/1712 mm with a wheelbase of 2820 mm, it offers five variants, including the new 'Yaoxiang' edition, which replaces the previous 'Zunxiang' edition. This edition introduces features like CDC adaptive suspension, a smart Bluetooth key, and a 12-speaker audio system, with an exclusive twilight purple interior option.
Joining the Tiggo lineup, the Tiggo 9 C-DM stands out as the plug-in hybrid variant. While mirroring the Tiggo 9's design, it incorporates a larger-capacity battery pack. Powered by Chery's Kunpeng Super Performance Electric Hybrid C-DM system, it combines a 1.5T hybrid engine with a front-mounted electric motor and a 3-speed DHT. Its ternary lithium battery has a 19.43 kWh capacity, providing an electric range of 106 km CLTC-rated, and a WLTC combined range exceeding 1,400 km. Charging capabilities are efficient, requiring only 25 minutes to charge from 30% to 80% with fast charging, while a full slow charge takes 3.5 hours. Prices for this model start at 165,900 yuan (23,300 USD).
The Tiggo 9X, a derivative of the Tiggo 9, distinguishes itself with a shorter wheelbase by 50 mm and notable design updates. The revised front bumper features independent air intakes replacing the previous full-width lower grille. Inside, it adopts a minimalist design with a dual floating-screen layout, hidden air vents, and a new center console. Additional features include a headrest audio system and a 'Boyar Sound' audio package with up to 14 speakers, complemented by an AI-based intelligent voice assistant.
Chery's strategic expansion of the Tiggo 9 family aims to capture a larger share of the midsize SUV market in China. By offering both fuel-powered and plug-in hybrid options, Chery seeks to appeal to a diverse consumer base amidst rising competition. The Tiggo 9 family challenges rivals like the Hongqi HS5, Exeed Yaoguang, as well as larger SUVs such as the GAC Trumpchi GS8 and Changan CS95. In August 2025, Tiggo 9 sales reached 2,920 units, ranking 36th among midsize SUVs in China, indicating room for growth.
Looking ahead, Chery's emphasis on hybrid technology aligns with global trends towards sustainable mobility. The introduction of the Tiggo 9 C-DM plug-in hybrid underscores the company's commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, Chery's diversified offerings position it well to adapt to changing consumer preferences and regulatory landscapes.
As Chery continues to innovate within the competitive Chinese automotive market, the launch of the updated Tiggo 9 family, including the Tiggo 9 C-DM plug-in hybrid, demonstrates the brand's strategy to offer versatile and technologically advanced vehicles. This approach not only caters to current market demands but also sets a foundation for future advancements in hybrid and electric vehicle technology.
