Great Wall Motor's (GWM) latest addition to the hybrid vehicle market, the 2026 Tank 400 PHEV, is now available in showrooms across China. This updated model features significant design enhancements, new technology integrations, and fresh color options, making it a noteworthy contender in the competitive plug-in hybrid segment.

The 2026 Tank 400 PHEV is a testament to GWM's commitment to innovation and design. One of the most striking updates is the introduction of the new 'Dunhuang Purple' exterior color, which adds a unique flair to the vehicle's rugged appearance. Additionally, the front bumper has been redesigned to include black mesh accents, enhancing its bold and aggressive look. These updates are part of a broader strategy to refine the Tank 400's mechanical styling, which continues to appeal to consumers looking for a robust and stylish SUV. Notably, the new model measures slightly differently from its predecessor, being 21 mm shorter, 10 mm wider, and 5 mm taller, while maintaining the same wheelbase.

Technological advancements are at the heart of the Tank 400 PHEV's refresh. The integration of a roof-mounted lidar system paired with GWM's third-generation Coffee Pilot Ultra advanced driving assistance system marks a significant step forward. This system offers features such as city and highway navigation on autopilot (NOA), enhancing safety and convenience for drivers. The addition of side and rear cameras further supports this system, providing a comprehensive view of the vehicle's surroundings. Blue indicator lights in the taillights signal when the system is active, ensuring that both the driver and other road users are aware of its operation.

Inside the cabin, the Tank 400 PHEV continues to impress with its state-of-the-art features. The interior design remains largely consistent with the outgoing model, featuring a 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and a 16.2-inch floating central touchscreen, both running GWM's latest infotainment system. This setup is complemented by a column-mounted gear selector, replacing the previous design. The vehicle also includes modern amenities such as wireless smartphone charging, a head-up display, a digital rearview mirror, a 15.6-inch rear ceiling screen, and an onboard refrigerator, ensuring a comfortable and connected driving experience.

Under the hood, the Tank 400 PHEV offers two distinct plug-in hybrid systems. The Hi4-Z variant combines a 2.0T engine with dual electric motors, delivering a combined output of 215 kW and 240 kW. This setup is paired with a 59.05 kWh ternary lithium battery, providing a CLTC-rated pure electric range of 200 km. Alternatively, the Hi4-T system features a single electric motor alongside the same 2.0T engine, with a 37.1 kWh battery pack, offering a 105 km pure electric range and a fuel consumption rating of 8.4 L/100 km. These options give consumers the flexibility to choose a powertrain that best suits their driving needs.

The introduction of the 2026 Tank 400 PHEV into the Chinese market underscores GWM's strategic emphasis on expanding its hybrid vehicle lineup. By incorporating advanced driver assistance systems and offering multiple powertrain options, GWM aims to capture a larger share of the growing demand for eco-friendly vehicles in China. As the industry continues to evolve, GWM's commitment to technological innovation and design excellence positions it as a formidable player in the global automotive landscape.

Does the lidar system actually improve safety, or is it just another gimmick? Advanced driving systems are often overhyped without clear benefits.
