Great Wall Motor (GWM) is gearing up for the pre-sale of its latest plug-in hybrid SUV, the Tank 400, set to start on October 21. The new model, which was officially unveiled in China on September 22, offers both the existing Hi4-T variant and a newly introduced Hi4-Z version. With updated design features and enhanced configurations, the Tank 400 aims to capture the attention of off-road enthusiasts and eco-conscious drivers alike.
The Tank 400 maintains much of the aesthetic appeal of its predecessor while incorporating several key updates. Among the most noticeable changes is the addition of black decorative trim on the front bumper and a reconfigured line layout that gives the vehicle a more robust presence. A standout feature is the new roof-mounted lidar, complemented by side and rearview cameras that enhance the vehicle's advanced driving assistance capabilities. These updates are part of GWM's third-generation Coffee Pilot Ultra system, designed to support urban and highway navigation on autopilot (NOA).
Another exciting element of the Tank 400's design is the introduction of a striking "Dunhuang Purple" exterior paint option, which is sure to turn heads. The vehicle's dimensions have also been slightly adjusted, now measuring 4964 mm in length, 1970 mm in width, and 1905 mm in height, making it marginally shorter, wider, and taller than the previous model. Despite these changes, the wheelbase remains the same at 2850 mm, ensuring stability and comfort during off-road ventures.
Under the hood, the Tank 400 offers two distinct powertrain options. The Hi4-Z variant is equipped with a 2.0T engine and dual electric motors, mirroring the setup found in the Tank 500 Hi4-Z. This setup provides a combined engine power of 185 kW and electric motors delivering up to 240 kW, enabling a fuel consumption rate of 8.3 liters per 100 km. The electric motors draw power from a 59.05 kWh lithium battery, offering a pure electric range of 200 km under the CLTC cycle. Meanwhile, the Hi4-T variant features a similar engine paired with a single electric motor, offering a slightly higher fuel consumption of 8.4 liters per 100 km and a pure electric range of 105 km, thanks to its 37.1 kWh battery pack.
Inside the Tank 400, the cabin reflects a blend of luxury and advanced technology. It retains the 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and a 15.6-inch floating central control screen, both integral to GWM's Coffee 3 operating system. The interior also includes upgraded features such as a mobile phone wireless charging panel, physical control buttons on the center console, a heads-up display, and a digital rearview mirror. The rear passengers can enjoy a 15.6-inch entertainment screen, and the vehicle now boasts 14 speakers, an increase from the previous 10, all complemented by Nappa leather seats for added comfort.
As GWM prepares for the pre-sale, the Tank 400 positions itself as an appealing option for those seeking a combination of rugged off-road capability and eco-friendly technology. The introduction of the Hi4-Z variant broadens its appeal, offering a more powerful hybrid system that enhances both performance and efficiency. With advancements in driving assistance and luxurious interior upgrades, the Tank 400 is set to compete strongly in the growing market for hybrid SUVs. The pre-sale will provide early adopters with an opportunity to experience these innovations firsthand and set the stage for GWM's continued success in the automotive industry.
