Huawei has set its sights on a transformative future with the announcement of its ambitious plans to roll out large-scale Level 3 (L3) autonomous driving technology by 2027. At the 2025 World New Energy Vehicle Congress in Hainan, China, the company unveiled its phased roadmap for the Qiankun intelligent driving system, which has already surpassed one million installations. This development marks a significant milestone in Huawei's vision for the future of smart mobility, promising to redefine safety standards and enhance transport efficiency.

The Qiankun system, a critical component of Huawei's autonomous driving ambitions, has already been integrated into over one million vehicles across 28 different models. These collaborations include notable brands like Harmony Intelligent Mobility, Avatr, Deepal, and Voyah. The system boasts an impressive track record, having accumulated over 5 billion kilometers of assisted driving mileage, 280 million automated parking maneuvers, and 2.71 million potential collision avoidances. Furthermore, the HarmonyOS-based cockpit, equipped with the MoLA architecture, has gained widespread acceptance, with its voice assistant activated 238 million times by August 2025.

Huawei's roadmap to autonomous driving is structured into three distinct waves, as outlined by Jin Yuzhi, CEO of Huawei's Smart Car Solutions Business Unit. The first wave, electrification, spanned from 2015 to 2022 and focused on replacing fuel with electricity to reduce travel costs. The current wave, intelligence, from 2022 to 2027, aims to enhance safety and user experience by reducing driver workload and accident risks through advanced algorithms. The third and final wave, automation, is set to commence in 2027, with a focus on redefining safety standards and creating new mobility spaces to improve transport efficiency.

Huawei plans to introduce its ADS 4 system by 2025, featuring a highway-oriented L3 commercial solution. This will be followed by a large-scale L3 highway deployment by 2026, alongside the initiation of Level 4 (L4) urban pilot programs, pending regulatory approval. By 2027, Huawei expects to achieve widespread adoption of L3 technology, while L4 capabilities will begin commercial use. This phase is expected to support the gradual deployment of robotaxis and logistics applications, heralding a new era of unmanned passenger and freight transport.

The 2025 World New Energy Vehicle Congress, organized by the China Association for Science and Technology, the Hainan Provincial Government, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, served as a platform for industry leaders to discuss the future of new energy and intelligent vehicles. The event underscored the importance of collaboration and innovation in driving the next phase of mobility advancements.

As Huawei continues to push the boundaries of autonomous driving technology, the implications for the automotive industry are profound. The company's strategic partnerships and technological advancements position it as a key player in shaping the future of transportation. With the successful implementation of its roadmap, Huawei's vision of a safer, more efficient, and autonomous transportation system is set to become a reality, offering new opportunities and challenges for stakeholders across the sector.
