Tesla enthusiasts in Australia will soon welcome the latest iteration of the popular Model Y, now featuring a high-performance flagship variant. While the updated Model Y boasts advanced features and improved specifications, it also comes with a steeper price tag. As Tesla continues to innovate, the new Performance model is set to redefine expectations in the electric SUV market.
Tesla's refreshed 2026 Model Y lineup introduces a new Performance variant at the top, offering enhanced speed and features. Priced at $89,400 before on-road costs, this model still manages to stay below Australia's Luxury Car Tax (LCT) threshold despite a five percent import tariff due to its European production. However, this marks an increase from the pre-facelift price of $82,900. The upgrades include adaptive suspension, a 16-inch infotainment touchscreen, and new heated, ventilated, and power-adjustable front sports seats with thigh extenders. [Photo suggestion: Image 1]
Beyond the flagship model, the entire Model Y range has seen notable updates in the 'Juniper' facelift. Models with rear-wheel drive and the Long Range all-wheel drive continue to be produced in China and feature revised front and rear styling, enhanced suspension, and improved driving range. These models now include heated and ventilated front seats, a 15.4-inch infotainment screen, and an 8.0-inch rear touchscreen. Despite these upgrades, Tesla has yet to confirm the release of the stretched, three-row Model Y L in Australia.
Tesla's drivetrain options for the Model Y remain diverse, with three powertrain configurations available. The Performance variant is powered by dual electric motors, achieving a claimed 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 3.5 seconds. The Long Range all-wheel drive offers a range of 600 km, while the rear-wheel-drive variant provides a range of 466 km. Battery capacities vary between 62.5 kWh for the RWD and 79 kWh for the AWD models. These figures highlight Tesla's commitment to balancing performance with efficiency.
Safety continues to be a cornerstone of the Tesla Model Y's appeal. The pre-facelift model received a five-star ANCAP safety rating, with high scores across adult and child occupant protection. Key safety features include seven airbags, autonomous emergency braking, and lane-keep assist, among others. While the updated model has not yet been rated by ANCAP, expectations remain high given Tesla's robust safety track record.
The Model Y's standard and optional features cater to a range of preferences. The base RWD model includes 19-inch wheels, a 15.4-inch touchscreen, and heated seats. Stepping up to the Long Range adds more speakers and acceleration boost capabilities, while the Performance model features 21-inch wheels, adaptive suspension, and a sporty interior with carbon-fiber trim. Tesla also offers a suite of driver assistance options, such as Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving capabilities, albeit at additional costs.
Tesla continues to offer a variety of color options and interior finishes. Standard colors include Pearl White, with additional options like Glacier Blue and Ultra Red available for a premium. Interior choices remain classic, with a standard black finish and an optional black and white interior. Tesla's approach to customization allows buyers to personalize their vehicles to suit their style and preferences.
