In an intriguing development for electric vehicle enthusiasts, a heavily camouflaged prototype of the anticipated 2026 BYD Dolphin has been spotted on public roads in China. This glimpse into the future of one of China's favorite compact electric vehicles hints at significant upgrades that could redefine its market position.

A Glimpse Under the Camouflage

The sighting of the camouflaged BYD Dolphin prototype has sparked widespread speculation about the vehicle's new features. The current model of the Dolphin holds the title of China's top-selling compact electric vehicle, with sales reaching 21,888 units in September alone. The next-generation model appears poised for a comprehensive mechanical overhaul, potentially featuring BYD's innovative CTB (cell-to-body) battery integration technology. This advancement could allow for a more efficient use of space and improved vehicle dynamics.

Rumors from the automotive industry suggest that the 2026 Dolphin might adopt a rear-wheel-drive configuration, a departure from the front-wheel-drive setup in previous models. This change could be accompanied by a revised rear suspension, possibly moving to a four-link or even five-link setup, enhancing ride comfort and handling. Additionally, the new model is expected to introduce a front trunk, higher-output motors, and an enlarged battery pack, potentially extending the vehicle's range to over 520 kilometers on the Chinese light-duty vehicle test cycle (CLTC). Such improvements would make the Dolphin not only a more powerful but also a more versatile vehicle.

The anticipated enhancements extend to the interior of the BYD Dolphin as well. Insiders suggest a simplified dashboard design, featuring dual-tone seats and a large, floating central touchscreen. This screen is expected to be powered by BYD's DiLink 5.0 system, utilizing the Qualcomm 8295 chip to provide rapid voice response times and support for optional Level 2+ driver assistance systems, including highway Navigation on Autopilot (NOA). These technological upgrades are aimed at elevating the driving experience, ensuring that the Dolphin remains competitive in a rapidly evolving market.

The exterior design language of the Dolphin is speculated to continue following BYD's 'Ocean Aesthetics' theme. This includes slimmer headlights, smaller air intakes, and a refined rear section with full-width taillights. Despite these changes, the vehicle's dimensions are expected to remain similar to the current model, maintaining a length of 4,280 mm, a width of 1,770 mm, and a height of 1,570 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. These dimensions strike a balance between compactness and interior space, making the Dolphin a practical choice for urban environments.

BYD plans to launch the new Dolphin between June and August 2026, with pricing expected to remain competitive, ranging from 99,800 to 129,800 yuan (approximately 14,000 to 18,200 USD). The current 2025 model, which also offers a range of up to 520 kilometers, has set a high benchmark. As the automotive industry continues to shift towards electrification, the 2026 BYD Dolphin's rumored features could solidify its status as a leader in the compact electric vehicle market. These developments are closely watched by industry analysts and consumers alike, as they promise to shape the future of affordable electric mobility.

Oh wow, another 'revolutionary' compact EV. I'm sure the range boost will be as 'groundbreaking' as watching paint dry. Let's hope the rear suspension holds up under the intense G-forces of a grocery run.
